is a variety of quartz containing SiO2. Amethyst is the birthstone for February.
The color of amethyst varies in shades of purple. Amethyst has a hardness of 7
with trigonal crystal system. If it were not for its widespread availability,
amethyst would be very expensive. Cut gems of amethyst are often graded using
the terms: Siberian, Uruguayan or Bahrain; to represent high medium and low
grade respectively, regardless of the actual source. Amethyst is often cut as
